Deconstructing
the Divide
A Crisis Exists Within Our Home
Throughout the United States, a plethora of communities have been divided upon the principles of race and socioeconomic status, factors that disproportionately marginalize people of color, restricting low-income and minority groups from acquiring the same quality of health, economic, and social opportunities as their Caucasian counterparts. Dispersed throughout the nation, these invisible bounds of segregation have begun to seep into communities ranging across St. Louis, one of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the country, wreaking havoc upon communities of color situated there.
Exemplary of this is the infamous 'Delmar Divide’, a phenomenon in which Black residents of St. Louis are visibly segregated from White residents. Erected by way of “segregationist ordinances like restrictive covenants and redlining” (Malcom & Watson, 2021), Delmar Boulevard distinctly separates the city racially and socioeconomically with “98% of the population north of Delmar consisting of Black individuals and 73% of the population south of Delmar being White” (Malcom & Watson, 2021). Amidst these racial divisions stems a direct correlation with the lack of accessibility and abysmal quality of resources available to Black citizens living in North County (Malcom & Watson, 2021), with disparities in healthcare ranking amongst one of the largest growing concerns in St. Louis.
Despite advances in anti-discrimination legislation and numerous acts designed to decrease racial bias and injustice within St. Louis’s marginalized communities, STL remains one of the most highly segregated metropolises in the United States as the city continues to grapple with a long-standing history of discriminatory policies and practices affecting people of color.
